A special feature of the Giftweb is that it incorporates a 26-part course that tells the recipients everything they need to know in order to be able to design and write full-featured websites on their own.
The course includes introductions to HTML, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), Active Server Pages (ASP), Javascript, Perl (CGI) and PHP programming, mySQL basics for online database creation, and Server Side Includes (SSI). Also dealt with are Internet related concepts such as TCP/IP, Telnet, Apache webserver directives, an introduction to Linux, and security issues.
Each lesson is written in clear jargon-free language, and is easy to understand and apply, whatever the age and computer experience of the user (basic PC literacy is assumed).
Included with each lesson are links to related articles, download sites for appropriate software (almost always free or shareware), links to source code libraries, links to other tutorials and reference works, and access to the Giftweb forum so that the users can share their mistakes (and their successes!) with others who are at the same stage.
The lessons will be emailed to the recipient at the rate of one per week, or they can all be accessed at once from the Giftweb Members-only area, for those who want to progress faster.
An interesting point! If you give someone a Giftweb, they will think of you every time they read the lessons, for up to 26 weeks!
