GIFTWEBS |
You've heard about domain names - dot.com fever still has the entire Western world in its grip - but it might be worth saying a little more about them.
Computers on a network like the Internet usually communicate with each other using IP addresses. When you log in, your PC might be given a temporary IP address of 62.7.60.3 by your Internet Service Provider (which will last for as long as you are connected. Next time you log on it will be a different address.) You might wish to access the Brad Pitt Fan Club website, which sits on a machine with an IP address of 216.92.102.250 (It actually does. Try typing that in the browser address window and see what comes up).
That address is not too easy to remember though, hence domain names. The actual domain name of that fan club is cinemafanclub.com. Much easier for humans to recall and use. There are machines on the Internet called Nameservers that hold hundreds of thousands of domain names and their numerical (IP) equivalents.
When you buy a Giftweb, the recipient will get a domain name that suits them - for example:
If you are buying a Giftweb for your uncle, whose name is Fred Bloggs, and whose main hobby is racing pigeons, on the order form you tell us the name and purpose of the Giftweb site and whether or
not you want it to be British or International. Let's assume that you have told us (Fred Bloggs, Pigeon Racing, British)
From the information you give us on the order form, we will choose the most appropriate available domain name for Uncle Fred's website. Perhaps you can have either:
When we confirm the order by email, we will give you a choice of available alternative domain names. On receipt of payment, Weblink Giftwebs will register your chosen domain name for you and associate it with the virtual server. We will send you information on the domain name, IP address, email address, passwords and so on when the time comes.
