GIFTWEBS |
Every web site on the Internet sits on a server somewhere. A server is simply a machine with big hard drives and lots of memory.
A virtual server is slightly different. Lots of the physical servers are vast, with Gigabytes of disk space and massive amounts of memory. Those, especially those owned by companies that host websites, are frequently divided by software to create dozens of virtual servers.
A virtual server is simply a piece of a big server that it created by special software, and runs as if it were a server itself. It has its own reserved portions of the real disk drives and the real memory, and acts in isolation from the rest of the server.
The Giftweb website will sit on a virtual server of either 70MB or 300MB (along with lots of other Giftwebs) but will appear as if it is sitting on a real, dedicated (and expensive) server.
