Dependent on the nature of your business, and the volume, structure and frequency of your backup needs, we can recommend, plan, install, configure and test backup methods ranging from tape cartridges or zip drives to CD-ROMS, server mirroring and high-end backup software such as Arcserve. We advocate regular, rotating backups of your vital data. Your company data is the third most valuable asset you have - the first two being personnel and time. If you have a LAN and your fileserver crashes irretrievably (it can happen - even RAID 5 arrays sometimes go berserk), then you have lost all the details of your inventory, customers, orders outstanding, accounts, payroll, sales prospects ... I could go on. It will take you days or even weeks to piece together the data you need to continue trading, and you will inevitably lose some, duplicate some, forget some, and get some wrong. It won't make your creditors happy, your customers might well go elsewhere for more prompt service, and your cash flow has slumped because you can't remember all your debtors and how much they owe. All this can be avoided by regular backups. Depending on the size of your organisation, that can be as simple as installing a tape drive or a CD writer. More advanced options include server mirroring, and online storage. It depends very much on the size of your organisation. Just as important is where you keep the backup data. If it is in your office desk drawer and the building burns down, you aren't much better off, are you? Backup daily, keep backups separate (in another building is fine.) In the event of a large asteroid strike, data security will probably be the least of your worries. Rotate your backups - have tapes or CDs for Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu, Fri, and rotate the first four weekly. Keep the main Friday backup for a month. Have main monthly backups, keep them for a year.
