Disaster Recovery

It's Sunday evening. Lightning strikes near your factory, causing a power surge which short-circuits your main junction box. The sparks ignite a bundle of old clothes that someone was collecting for charity. The power surge has knocked out the sprinkler system, and the enire building burns to the ground.

You arrive early Monday morning (you are the boss after all, it's your job to arrive first) to find mounds of bricks, and the odd smoking beam still pointing skywards...

What then...

OK. You take a deep breath and begin to implement our disaster recovery plan. Following the backup strategy we outlined for you, your data is safe on four digital tapes which are in your study back at home. Also there is a PC with hard disk big enough to accomodate the data, and also loaded with the core software you will need to begin functioning again.

N.B. This is not the PC that your fifteen year old son also uses to play Final Fantasy and Doom. That one is riddled with viruses, and full of forgotten games software.

Part of the disaster plan involved all workers knowing what to do when they find such a situation. The key ones assemble at your house. The rest go back to their homes and wait for your call.

Your emergency PC contains details and contact names for the buildings and contents insurance, the emergency PC leasing arrangements, the list of temporary ofice accomodation suppliers, temporary warehousing facilities, truck rental people, machine tool stockists, and all the other things you need to recreate your empire (all updated frequently of course).

(If your mills, looms, lathes, grinders, engine test-beds, electron scanning microscopes and coffee machine have benn lost as well, we can't help you. We only know the IT side of things. We leave the rest to the experts in that area.)

By nine-thirty, your accounts manager, personnel manager, production supervisor and P.A. are in your study, all on their mobile phones while your IT manager downloads the data onto the emergency PC.

By noon, you are all in temporary offices, the goods arriving are being put in a temporary warehouse, your PA has emailed all suppliers and major customers informing them of the hiccup, the insurance adjudicator has been to see what was your factory, the emregency PC is now a file and mail server and four more leased PCs are being unpacked in front of you, while your wife puts together the new desks. The machine tools are due to arrive at the temporary warehouse tomorrow, and the personnel; person has given all your staff the new addresses and phone numbers.

Now you can have your nervous breakdown...

That wasn't to bad was it? We can help you plan for things like that. Very often, an outsider's perspective helps in such matters. If everything is lost, what is the minimum you need to start functioning again?
