ISP Installation and configurationA first impression is that it is very easy to choose an Internet Service Provider (ISP). I mean, how many CDs do you get every week offering you (FREE) webspace, multiple (FREE) email addresses, great communication speeds, modem-to-user ratio and so on? I probably get three of these a week. So when you want a website for your business, you just slap in one of these CDs, install, register, design a website, use an FTP tool to upload it, and there you go! Right? Wrong! Consider this. If you intend to accept any confidential information from potential clients, such as credit card numbers, bank account details, personal details or things of that nature, you will need at least some of your website to be sitting on a secure server (one running Secure Socket Layers (SSLs)). To the best of our knowledge, NO free ISPs offer that. Again, think. If your website becomes popular (and surely that is the aim), and it receives lots of visits per month, that means that the pages on the site are going to be downloaded to other peoples browsers' frequently. This brings in the topic of bandwidth. To give you a simple calculation, assume that your website has 20 pages, and each of these pages is 10 Kilobytes (10 Kb) in size, then the total size of your site is 200 Kb. If 5000 people visit the site every month (which is good) then the total volume of data downloaded from your site is 200 Kb X 5000 = 1 Gigabyte (1 Gb). Read the small print in the terms and conditions of your ISP. Is there a condition in there that states that if the bandwidth exceeds 1Gb then you start paying heavily for the extra transmission? I bet there is! If 10,000 people per month visit the site, you could end up paying more for hosting the site then it generates in revenue. Here at Weblink I.T., we are adept at reading the terms and conditions, querying the hidden costs and summarising the benefits and pitfalls of any ISP. We can help you choose the best ISP for your business requirements, now and future, and then install and configure it for you, including domain name registration, mail forwarding, configuring mail programs and servers to work with the new setup, and all the other annoying little things that will appear during transitions. Our prices for this work are extremely reasonable, starting from as little as £40.00 plus VAT. Why not contact us for a discussion and an informal quote?
